Is is better to put your PC on standby where the monitor
and hard drive shuts down or just leave it on all day. I
thought the constant starting and shutting down
of "standby" is harder on a machine then letting it on
constantly. Have any ideas?

Insignificant differences between shutting down and leaving it on other than
your electric bill.

Depends if you are on a network (cable, even dialup), if someone else has
access to your computer etc: for security reasons, turn it off.
If you have a LCD monitor, the bulb has a limited (30000 hour or so, I
guess) life. Hence, turn off the monitor. Same for harddrive - limited life.
Of course, the life span of the hardware is longer than its technically
feasable life - i.e. the hardware will become obsolete faster than it will
worn off in most cases for the average user.
All in all, it makes little difference for the hardware if you turn it off
or not. Considerations about security, necessity of immediate use etc. must
be evaluated.
