Standby vs HDD shutdown

Please explain to me the difference (in the power management options)
between standby and shutdown of hard disk drives. Also, is it better for
hard drives to be shutdown before standby occurs, or vice versa?

I found out the difference. For those of you out there who want to know,
on Windows workstations the hard disk drive shutdown leaves the CPU
fully powered, whereas standby not only shuts down the hard disk drive
but also puts the CPU in a lower powered state.
