I had posted about this before and still haven't figured out how to fix this
problem yet. I have three XP machines running that all had the standby
option originally working. In my third machine, in which I had recently
installed a XP upgrade from 98SE, the standby option just stopped working a
day or so ago and I really had not done anything that I can remember to
change things. There must be some relatively simple way to specifically
restore standby operation to these machines.

I surely hope for some more wisdom on this subject from those knowledgeable
about this

Thanks,
Bascom King

The lack of a Standby button indicates you are using XP's
generic VGA drivers.

Your video adapter drivers probably need to be reinstalled.
Visit the support web site of the manufacturer of your video
card adapter and download the latest drivers.

Before installing them, uninstall the old drivers. In your
Control Panel, open the Add or Remove Programs applet
and look for your video drivers to uninstall.

If you happen to have a notebook computer, visit the notebook
manufacturer's support website to download the correct video
adapter drivers for your specific notebook model.

After installing a fresh set of drivers, right-click on your
desktop and select Properties > Settings, change the Color
Quality to "Highest (32 bit), then adjust your Screen Resolution
to your liking, then click on Apply.

Hi,

Usually this is driver related. Perhaps a recently installed or updated one?
Or one from Windows Update? It may also be that one on the system became
corrupted, and now the system is using a Windows default driver (and many of
these just provide basic function, but do not support reduced power states).
In any case, this is a place to start.
