Standby not available after re-install

After a hard drive crash I reinstalled Windows Xp and the
Standby or Hibernate functions that used to work on the
first install on a Asus L8400 L no longer work. I have
all the updates downloaded and installed but it has not
made any difference. Standby is still blanked out on the
menu.

This used to work fine on the former drive with the same
copy of Windows Xp ... I have downloaded and installed
SP1a but not SP1

The computer works perfectly otherwise. Any suggestions
anyone?
 
Usually driver problems cause this. Check Asus website for latest chipset
drivers as well as your other hardware. Also check that ACPI and APM are
enabled in BIOS. Until recently I had an Asus K7M and no matter what I did
could never get Standby to work in XP. Two very good Asus groups are:
