When I click Start | Shutdown | Standby, I get a message box "System Standby
Failed" with the following text:

"The device driver for the Communications Port Com1: device is preventing
the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try
again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

I checked out Com1: in Device Manager which says it's working properly. I
have a DSL which is always on.

What's going on?

Hi,

Disable Quicken download manager, if you are using any version of Quicken.
This will solve the problem.

Best of luck,

COM1 is usually an external serial port on the computer. Either a DB9 or DB25 connection. Usually used for a serial mouse or external modem. It can also be used for a Direct Cable Connection with another computer. If you don't have any of these types of devices, either disable it in the BIOS or try disabling it in Device Manager.

I disabled Com1: in Device manager, and tried standby again. This time I
got a similar message specifying the dialup modem. Neither device is used
any longer since I switched to DSL. So I disabled the modem, and standby
now works, as does the Quicken download.
