standby and hibernation

I have XP Professional and I used to have the standby
option when I went to shut down the computer. It has
now "grayed out" and is not available. When I go to
power options under control panel, the option for standby
and hibernation is gone. It's as if they never existed.
It appears that both options have been somehow disabled.
Does anyone know how I might enable them again? If I
have to reinstall XP, can I do that over the existing XP
without messing up any programs?

Thanks in advance.

Visit the support website of the manufacturer of your computer
or video card adapter, search for Windows XP compatible drivers,
download and install them. The Standby button should then appear.

Note: If you have a notebook computer, download the video adapter
drivers only from the notebook computer manufacturer's support website.
