I've moved to where we have an occasional power outage so I have been
turning off my laptop when I leave the house so that it won't revert to
battery and run down. But does that happen when the laptop is on standby?

That depends on the laptop and it's power management settings. (Windows and
BIOS) When on battery only, mine will shut down from standby after a period
of non use. Hibernate may behave differently than standby. The order on mine
is is On, Standby, Hibernate, Off. It will also shutdown when the battery
reaches a specific low charge state.

Thanks for the responses. What I found is that standby uses a little bit of
battery power, hibernation hardly any at all. So I have set my Thinkpad to
hibernate when it has been running on batteries for 30 minutes. That should
take of it.
