I am reciving a message that Communications Port (COM1)
is preventing move to stand by. How can I correct?

Thanks

If you don't have a device you are using on com1 then
disable com1 in the bios. If you have an active device
(like a modem or external drive etc etc) then you should
consider disconnecting that first, alternatively you
should consider disablisg standby mode and just shutting
down your machine when not in use (unless really really
neccessary to have quick uptime - some laptops (if indeed
we are talking about a laptop, if not why bother with
standby mode?) have a tendancy to keep the processor fan
on while in standby mode, most users see this as an OK
time to shove the poor laptop into a bag and walk around
or catch a tube... oh no... the poor beast cant breathe
after a while and starts to suffer from overheating, and
causes irreprable dammage to the hardware components,
after a few months of "Stand-by Bag Abuse" you start
getting wierd errors, that most techies shy away from,
and after a few more months your little beauty dies
costing you more money to fix than to replace, so you
sell it and some other poor sucker picks up the problems,
and some other poor techie has to fix it... oops I think
I've gone too far...

If you are having problems with devices preventing you
from going to standbymode, consider either not using
standby mode or disabling the device.

I agree that it would be best to just disable the port or disconnect the
device. Suspend mode is excellent for certain types of computers.
Laptops and Media Center computers are good candidates. Is your
computer able to go into Hibernation (or is support for Hibernation
enabled)?

The reason this is probably happening is because the device (what device
is it by the way?) does not support S1 Sleep state and/or is still
trying to access Windows. One program that does this to me all the time
is ActiveSync for my Pocket PC. If you have something like that, just
remove it from the cradle or disconnect it ;)
