Stanby option greyed out in shutdown screen

I have both a HP laptop and a cheap Tiger Direct AMD Sempron machine running
XP. Both of these machines recently had the standby option operable. For
some reason they both now have the stanby option greyed out in the shutdown
screen. Does anyone have a reason for this and what can be done to restore
the standby option?

I hope for some wisdom on this!

One of the first things you should look at is your video card driver.
Almost every time I've found a "standby" issue, it's been due to improper
video card drivers.
