Hey, Microsoft's Hotfix Checker 3.32 tells me I have SQL
Server 2000 "Gold", I'm thinking it came with my OfficeXP
apps?..

Anyway! I see there are service packs out for it. Service
Pack 3a to be exact. But when trying to download the
update, and subsequently installing it - it reads I don't
have SQL Server 2000 installed..!?!

What's the deal?

Thanks for ANY help.. Maybe I'm not installing the
service pack updates for SQL right, I don't know..

MSDE (the data engine install of SQL) appears that way
in the results from the checker.
There are a number of different cuts of MSDE and you
must use the correct updates for each.
Your best actions would be to stop SQL in the services
and then go to http://microsoft.com/sql/security
and start with the Slammer worm resources.

OH, okay. Thanks for the name info.

Yeah, I've had the SQL stopped in the services, and I've
been up to date on all the patches as possible, including
the Blaster worm.

That link pointed me to a few new pages which helped me
understand better the fuss over all these
different 'instances'.. I even had to jump into the
registry editor and see that my instance was installed
from 'sqlrun01'. And I read you need to patch such
instances with 'sqlrun01.msp'.. but it still doesn't seem
to work.

I see that my MSDE did indeed come installed in a folder
from my Office XP cd.

Been wracking my head on how to update the darned thing.
Kinda wish I just had someone in person to do it for me
LOL, confusing stuff.

Are there any instances in which you CANNOT update MSDE
2000?

I think that they have finally gotten things somewhat
straightened out. However at one point I had pulled
out so much hair I just uninstalled some MDSEs.
Some MDSE can upgrade to SP 3 with the web
available download while others can only be upgraded
with the SQL SP3 CD that one can order.
However, the SQL worm tool can patch any version
for that specific problem.
