Hi there everyone. I have a new Dell PC with Windows XP Home. We have a home network through which the internet connection is shared. Our Dell has been getting slower and slower and we are being constantly bombarded by pop-ups. A few pop-ups is fine, but we're getting over twenty pop-ups. I can't find any reliable anti-spyware programs that fix my problem. PLEASE HELP
Thanks!

Try downloading a copy of Spybot S&D. Run spybot and do a scan (be sure to
UPDATE it first!). Follow up with a defragmentation. You should notice a
definite speed boost.

If you don't use a firewall get one now and shut off dcom
service.

Hi,

More info about parasites:
http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

Download the utility CWshredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

Unzip - close *all* instances of IE & OE, hit the executable and
follow
the prompts.

You can also download Hijack This from here:

http://www.mjc1.com/files/merijn/hijackthis.exe

Go here:
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

For instructions on how to use it; you have to post the log it
produces here:

so experts tell you what is good and what is malware
HiJack This is a program that simply searches for programs that run at
boot time, and checks for browser plug-ins. The results this program
gives you are generally just informative. Most of the programs it will
come up with are valid programs that you actually want running. You'll
have to go through the results and tell the program to delete unwanted
programs. If you can't figure out what some of the programs are, don't
just delete them, research them and/or post them so experts can let
you know what the program does. Just type the program name into google
which gets a decent answer pretty quickly.

Try downloading, installing and updating the
spyware removers from the links below. Run both of them.

Ad-aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

If these don't correct the problem, then get yourself a copy of
BHODemon, available at
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm .

It does not need installing - simply unzip and run the EXE program. It
is easy to use. It will find the hijackware DLL files, and give you
the ability to disable them.

Hope this helps.

Greetings --

There are at least three varieties of pop-ups, and the solutions
vary accordingly. Which specific type(s) is troubling you?

1) Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"

This type of spam has become quite common over the past year or
so, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you most definitely open to other threats, such as the Blaster Worm
that still haunts the Internet. Install and use a decent, properly
configured firewall. (Merely disabling the messenger service, as some
people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does little or nothing
to truly secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with"
the security gap represented by these messages is particularly
foolish.

If you're using AOL, you'll either need to find a 3rd party
firewall that is compatible with AOL, or switch to a real ISP that is
compatible with the real Internet. This is because AOL is an on-line
content provider that ignores international Internetworking standards
in favor of its own proprietary products, and has deliberately made
its connection software incompatible with both WinXP's built-in
firewall and WinXP's Internet Connection Sharing feature. AOL's
proprietary connection applet is deliberately designed to preclude
your setting/adjusting any of its properties, to include
enabling/disabling WinXP's ICF and ICS.

Whichever firewall you decide upon, be sure to ensure UDP ports
135, 137, and 138 and TCP ports 135, 139, and 445 are _all_ blocked.
You may also disable Inbound NetBIOS (NetBIOS over TCP/IP). You'll
have to follow the instructions from firewall's manufacturer for the
specific steps.

You can test your firewall at:

Oh, and be especially wary of people who advise you to do nothing
more than disable the messenger service. Disabling the messenger
service, by itself, is a "head in the sand" approach to computer
security. The real problem is _not_ the messenger service pop-ups;
they're actually providing a useful, if annoying, service by acting as
a security alert. The true problem is the unsecured computer, and
you've been advised to merely turn off the warnings. How is this
helpful?

2) For regular Internet pop-ups, you might try the free 12Ghosts
Popup-killer from http://12ghosts.com/ghosts/popup.htm, Pop-Up Stopper
from http://www.panicware.com/, or the free Google Toolbar from
http://toolbar.google.com/, which is what I use.

3) To deal with pop-ups caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or
KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but without
understanding the consequences) installed, two products that are
quite effective (at finding and removing this type of scumware) are
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions. It's even
possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system
against most future intrusions. I use both and generally perform
manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Definitely have a firewall running, even if it's just he Window
firewall. I've always had excellent results from PopUpCop 2.0.2.24.
It may be an older version but it has stopped all of them. Anothe
thing to do is to turn off (disable) the Messenger Service that you ca
locate in Administrative Tools if you are getting Messenger message
from unwanted sources. The down-side is that you and the othe
computers on your network will not be able to "net send" messages t
each other. As for spyware and adware. I recently purchased Webroo
Spy Sweeper which was PC Mag's Editor's Choice. Four out of fiv
stars. Spybot Search & Destroy 1.2 got 4 out of 5 stars but didn'
make the editor's choice due to the removal of spy/adware. A
protected as my PC is, I was surprised of what was found by Sp
Sweeper.

Good luck.
