Hi,
Just installed Spybot and run it. It took over 3 hours to check the computer
instead of the usual 5 minutes. It also used 100 of my processing power
although that dropped to allow any other program to work, like Word, at
normal speed.

Is 3 hours normal for the latest Spybot?

Cheers
Lenny

For it ( SpyBot ) to run 44,000 bot checks that's a lot of time.
But it varies depending on how much content is on the PC. For
comparison how long does AdAware take to scan the machine ?
I've seen it take 45 Minutes, but that was on a "Heavily" infested
PC. Also Spybot is a CPU intensive task and it's not unusual to
see processor use capped at 100% while it runs.

You should run it in Safe Mode.

Alias

Yep, I have also run it in safemode and updated the files. Adaware takes
about 10 minutes. I also only ran it after I thought I had deleted all the
malware on the computer. Maybe I am wrong!

Have you "Ever" purged/emptied all the TIF (Temporary Internet
Folders) for each user/profile on the PC. With default settings the
size of the content can get to be very large and have huge amounts
of files contained within them. Check the default size of the folder,
best to restrict it to a value of ~25-40 Megabytes.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate forums for expert analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
I am glad to see that you are still around, Robear, even if it is now in
the XP general newsgroup rather than the 98 newsgroup. I just wanted to
say hello and feel free to check in with the 98 general newsgroup again
if you want. PCR was saying that you were in hibernation.

Nope, I'm fully XP-radiated now & you can't see me. <VBEG>
