Hey, guys.

I've got a network with 2 XP boxes and 2 older OSs.
One of the XP boxes was upgraded from ME. Now, when
browsing, copying, anything the XP boxes are the slowest
on the network and usually lock up. The older boxes just
fly on the network.
It seems to me that the ME-upgrade XP box is the
problem, but I can't find anything that is out of place
or incorrectly setup.
I've received only one error message and that was when
I was using a cmd prompt to copy across the network.

The semaphore timeout period has expired.

Any ideas? Should I entirely wipe the ME-to-XP
upgrade and install a fresh XP? Can I avoid this?

Thanks, guys, for your help.

Hello
I am not sure why you are have trouble, but I am running XP upgrades from ME
on 2 of my 3 network and have no trouble, maybe you need to upgrade the
firmware on your router maybe you need to release and renew the IP's and
DNS, I do not think you should do anything drastic until you do some more
research. Check your router settings.

From experience, ME is the WORST OS (sorry Microsoft). I also have experience on upgrades (Not happy with upgrades. Little problems has arised alot). It is better to backup your data on to another computer, tape or CD RW (or R) and buy the full version (2000, XP, Etc). Completly format the hard drive (NTFS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) and install from scratch. NOTE: When installing 2000 Pro or XP PRO, it is a good idea to get the chipset software for your motherboard. I Don't use the drivers that the OS already has. For me and my clients, I always but Intel Motherboards. Intel has (in my opinion and experience) the best setup for upgrades and quality. I have purchased over 20 computers over the last 2 years and I build them myself. I've seen AMD's bite it here and there when running alot of programs. Not as much anymore. I am still sticking with intel till I hear otherwise. A little up there in price, BUT WELL WORTH IT!!!!! I stay in contact with x co-workers in the IT field. I hear things

Advise
After the fresh install on the OS, ALWAYS Load the chipset drvers prior to anything else. The Motherboard and the os need to talk to eachother in order to have a smooth running OS. Windows 2000 PRO and XP has built-in drivers for most motherboards, but I've heard that sometimes problems occur down the road. If you get the latest Mother board drivers from the manufacturer, things go smoother in most cases. I run my own business doing networking for small businesses. Learned alot over the last 7 years

Hope I helped you. -Keit
