You could download and install Open Office, which is open source, free and
compatible with Word files.

http://download.openoffice.org/

....and excel.

Works and Excel spreadsheets are not compatible - Nepatsfan has offered the
perfect solution. Open Office will open Microsoft Office Documents but does
not include several features that may be in the document - also if the file
is Office 2007 with new four charater file extensions Open Office may not be
successful

So the perfect solution is installing Open Office? How about Excel Viewer?
That way he can stick to Microsoft without a third rate office product!
WRONG

===And on and on we go - Windows vs Linux, MS Office vs OO, Hertz vs Budget,
Bud vs Coors and so forth - happy with you have? Great!!

One way would be to install OpenOffice.org for free. It is an MS Office
work alike.

I'm sorry, but someone will have to explain to me how you can 'stick to
Microsoft without a third rate product' - seems contradictory to me.
