I look for a free spreadsheet software that is small so that you can
make it run on old machines. And - the cherry on the cake - in French.

Ok, I'd even make it without the cherry.

Years ago, I had an old spreadsheet program called
WingZ from the early 1990's. It lost
out to Excel and QuattroPro but WingZ
was hot stuff for a while.

There might be the old fully functional demo
out on the web somewhere.

You want small? VisiCalc...the very first spreadsheet program, 27KB, no
cherry necessary.

See site for command reference card.

This version of the program is very similar to the original VisiCalc
that first came out on the Apple II in 1979. It has a few extra
features: a "Home" key, support for four arrow keys, a few extra
commands including /E for editing the contents of a cell, and upper and
lower case letters. This version was for DOS 1.0, which did not have
directories, so it can only access files in the current directory. The
original version as shipped had copy protection. This one does not,
though it is still covered by a license agreement.
