spontaneous dial-up connection

My computer connects to the internet intermittenly, even
if Outlook of IE is not open. I only have 1 ISP via a 56k
modem. I use Window/Office Pro XP. I have turned off such
as 'redial if line dropped', etc. I have also gone into
the msconfig/Startup and turned everything off which
seems to help but this interferes with my Norton email
protection, etc.
I feel it may be a problem w/ Outlook which shows
Contacts and a Personal Address book but not the Outlook
Address Book which should copy automatically from
Contacts. I don't know how to do a clean re-install on
Outlook only, though I have exported all messages to
Outlook Express. I do not want to lose my email history.
any ideas? Thx

My computer connects to the internet intermittenly,

In addition to what Ramesh said, check that your clock is
NOT set to synchronise with an internet server. This
option is ON by default in XP.
