Is it possible when working with Excel to split the
screen and paste a Word document in one pane and an Excel
document in another?

You can embed a Word document in Excel using
Insert >> Object >> Create new >> Microsoft Word document
Any time you want to edit the Word document, double-click on it to activate
Word.

Similarly, you can embed an Excel worksheet in Word document.

This isn't exactly what you asked for, but it might suit your needs.
 
With a workbook open, go to Window>New Window and create a second window.

Window>Arrange>Vertical(or whatever).

You can now paste whatever you want into either window.
