Split date in cell into 2 separate cells

I have Oct 4 in cell K1 (the cell is custom formatted using mmm d). I would
like cell L1 to display Oct and M1 to display 4. I tried using the left and
right commands but they give me 389 and 94. How can I do this? Thanks
