Hi,

not sure if this can be done or not !

I have composed a crossword but need to add the clue numbers to the
top left hand corner of certain cells. This is not difficult with an
empty cell - I just formatted the number to appear top left and made
the font size smaller.

But how can I do this if the cell contains a letter that is used in
the crossword. I need a the small number top left and a centered
letter in the same cell.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mike

See if this works for you:

Select the crossword cells and make sure you have your row heights and
column widths in their FINAL configuraton.

Set the alignment of the crossword range to:
Horizontal: Centered
Vertical: Bottom

Set the protection for the input cells to Unlocked.

Next, create a textbox (from the drawing menu) that is the same size as the
borders of the crossword range.

Enter your reference numbers...padding spaces to position the references
properly.
(When carriage returns push the next row too far down...add an extra
carriage return and set the font size for the blank row to 2, or whatever
value makes the spacing proper)

When done....Format the textbox to have:
No fill color
No borders
Protection: Locked and Lock Text

When done: Tools>Protection>Protet Sheet

Now, when you click on the cells...you'll actually be clicking right through
the textbox to the underlying cells and can type the letters.

Does that help?

Enter formatted clue numbers into the crossword array.
Tools > Options > View > Grid Lines > off
Print Screen > Paste
Trim picture to show only number array.
Set transparent colors.
Create several copies.
Turn on gridlines
Trim copies to narrow horizontal or vertical strips of numbers.
Restore crossword array to large, centered text.
Position strips of clue numbers into proper position.

thank you Ron and thank you Herbert,

I will give them both a spin this evening.

got to here ok bit but couldn't see how to trim the image.

Is the 'basic' idea here to use the image as a background ?

thanks,

got to here but ran into trouble creating the textbox.

as is now obvious, Excel is not my forte,

If you don't see the Drawing Toolbar.....

Right-click in the gray area to the right of the Help menu item.
->If Drawing is not clicked....click it

On the Drawing Toolbar, the Textbox icon is a white square with the letter
"A" in the upper left and horizontal lines filling the rest of the square.

To create a textbox...click the Textbox icon one time, then Right-click on
the sheet (hold the mouse button down), drag diagonally down and to the
right, release when the box is the right size.

Just to let you know that I managed to get the numbers added by using
both suggested methods.

I did end up trying something else which was inspired by the two
methods though and it worked very well.

I made a textbox that contained just the number 1 (very very small)
and then copied and pasted it 36 times and changed the number 1 to
number 2, number 3 etc.

It's now really easy to just drag the text boxes into the crossword
and if I make another crossword I'll be able to use the same
textboxes.

I certainly learned a lot more about Excel doing this and had only
used it previously to handle my income and expenditure.

I am an English teacher for non native-speakers and am going to use
the crosswords as a teaching tool.

thanks again,

Michael
