Split a file into two yet size of both files are near size of orig

I split a file that was approximately 29M in size into two separate files at
the halfway point. Both split files still reflect a file size near the 29M
size.

I am tracking changes and the document(s) are laden with graphics. Is it
because I am tracking changes that the file sizes are still near the
original? Will it require me to accept the changes before these file sizes
reduce?
