Spikes in CPU useage

I've just done a recent install of WinXP Pro and have added a few programs
(Office, Norton and a game or two). What I notice now is that "something" is
hitting the CPU every 5 or 10 seconds. The spike causes my music to skip and
stutter. I've checked in task manager to see what's running and have even
shut down several items but it still seems to occur. I'm running a 2.4Ghz
with 512Ram and a 128meg video card so the system should (and has on a
previous install) run musicmatch without hesitating.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you checked for spyware? It can cause all kinds of problems having to do
with performance.
