Speller virus?

My keyboard keys have a heavy return spring, God only knows how may times
I've spilt coffee on them and I'm not the greatest speed typist on my block
and used to depend heavily on my speller but for about the past month I have
made an inordinate amount of spelling errors while posting to newsgroups,
etc.

Now even the pro's seem to be having problems. Is there something wrong
(like a virus) with any of Microsoft's spellers?

None of your post tells us anything about which software you're using or
what EXACT behaviour leads you to suspect a virus.

Also, is it only with your newsgroup software (whatever that is) or with
all software programs (word-processors etc).

No.

Problems with spellers originate at the speller's end.

i.e., if you can't ****ing spell, don't try to blame it on MS.

This happens in any program the utilizes keyboard input.

Although I get a lot of "f" being transposed as "r" and vice versa I get a
lot of misspellings such as incontinence instead of inconvenience. Allot of
it could be just sloppy typing or trying to type as fast as normal
conversation but then it appears that even after I have slowed down and
double checked spelling before hitting the send button that all sorts of
typing errors seem to have magically appeared after the document has been
sent. No matter how slow I type or how thorough I check the spelling
visually I will normally find spelling errors in a document after it has
been posted.

This happens mainly in both the newsgroup and email portions of Outlook
Express, in Word, in any Windows based programs that utilize or require the
keyboard for input. Consequently I am curious as to whether there is or
maybe a speller virus.

Above is the perfect example: Although I typed "that" and "that" is what was
read and checked before doing the post "the" is what is now shown...

Hello Bill
Apologies in advance, but I have to ask this. And I hope someone does
manage to sort out your problem.
I believe this 'virus' or whatever you wish to call it, is called
'Dislexica'
My God, I have it as well. ;-) ;-)

Replace your keyboard. In the future, dont keep your drinks nearby.

You mean that instead of needing a speller antivirus program what I really
need is a beer?

At least two, I would say and the fingers do not start to glide over the
board in correct fashion, I would add another, until ALL the words look
right.
Hope someone has the answer for you

Very few programs actually use the Microsoft spell-checkers: basically
Microsoft Office programs and Outlook Express. So if it's any text
program, then it's unlikely to have anything to do with the spell-checker.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that you may have changed
your keyboard layout to something other than your expected default.

Possibly:

Update your a/v program and scan in safe mode.

LOL! I don't have dislexia, I just can't type very welll.

Come to think about it every once in awhile I see the keyboard "lock" led's
flash on and off again. Could I be changing the layout by accidentally
entering a special control key sequence or could a virus be resetting my
keyboard? (I assume that if the layout is changed that the speller would
then correct the spelling accordingly thus getting it wrong.)

Also, are you using a custom dictionary in Word? It may have become full
or corrupted. What version of Office are you using?

Steve N.

Yeah. I've looked at the custom dictionaries and they seem to be okay and
now that I'm trying to slow down the problem does not seem to be as bad.
Also I noticed that in Word the seller is set up to do auto correction while
I'm typing which the spell checker in OE can not do so it might also be just
a matter of fast typing in OE having much worse results than in Word. I'm
using Office 2003 on two computers and Office 97 and Works 2000 on most of
the others. Plus I've installed some really ancient DOS and Windows 3.1
spellers that are suppose to spell check any text that is copied to the
clipboard or in some cases just highlighted and in a textbox on screen -
great for wiki's without spellers.

LOL! I don't have dyslexia, I just can't type very well.

Actually I now think it is a combination of speed typing and the failure of
spellers to check the context of a word.

Hey, what happened to my extra "l" in "well"? It was a mistake at first
but I intentionally left it that way to illustrate my point.

Since you report it happening in programs that don't use the speller
then I think that discussion of that is a red herring.

There are various SHIFT+ALT key toggles for changing keyboard layouts.

AND a new keyboard. I'll join you for the beer, you're on your own for the
keyboard! ;-)
