whenevr I specll check a document the spell checker
cannot distinguish between deleted and words and those
that are reatined. for example if I replce sate with
state the specll checker will see satestate and ask me to
correct. This can get relally frustrating. IS theer any
way this can be fixed? I look in the KB nad came up empty.

Hi Jmb,

Which version of Word is involved (including Service Packs)?
If you don't know, check in the Help/About Word dialog box.

Hi Jmb,
Word 2002 SP 2
Confirm (I also see it in Word 2002 SP1). FWIW, it's fixed
in Word 2003. I don't know if it's fixed in Word 2002 SP3.

Remarks:
Word will delete the accompanying SPACE character when you
delete an entire word, even though you didn't select it.
Make sure there's a space character between all the "real"
words in the document and you won't see the problem.

Where I did see the problem you describe, and no space
charater was involved, was when I tried to delete single
characters within a Word, then type in a different (but
valid) character. Example: lazy; first delete the z; then
type in a d. It looks like this: lazdy (with the z struck
out, and the dy marked as a spelling error).

If this bothers you, then
- spell check the document with only Final showing (no
markup) OR
- hide the display of deleted text (this is how Word 2002
is meant to be used)
