Hi

I have 100MBit network and 4 computers connected through switch. When
copying file between computers, average transfer rate is between 1.5 and
2.0MB/s. Ideal for 100MBit would be 12.5MB/s. Why is speed only 15-20% of an
ideal speed? The same was on my old computer also having 100MBit network
card. Even if I connect computers directly without router or hub, speed
doesn't increase.

12.5mb/s will never happen. To be honest though, you should get about
50% of that speed on a decent ethernet network. You need to allow for
protocl overheads and the like. Is it definately a switch and not a hub?
Is the wiring decent? Handy hint, don't run it past any florescent lights!

I never expect it to go that fast.

That woud be sufficient.

How do I do that?
Is it definately a switch and not a hub?

Yes, definately. I have a Linksys router and switch, all in one.
Is the wiring decent?
What do you mean by that? I have 4 computers and all 4 are connected with a
network cable (none longer then 8 meters)
Handy hint, don't run it past any florescent lights!
Interesting. But I have no such lite source present.

Are you measuring this while copying a number of (relatively) small files?
If so, you won't see an average speed approaching max possible because of
the overhead of dealing with all the files.

Try copying one large (200+ MB) and see if your rate come in at the
8-9MB/sec range. If that's still running in the 1.5-2MB/sec range, there's
something wrong with your network settings.

Hi

This happens when copying one large file. What could be wrong?

Can't necessarily say what's wrong, but here's something to try.

On both PCs, right click on Network Places, select properties. On the
network connection, right click and select Repair.

Test your transfer speed.

this action.
