My connection speed reduces from 30kbps plus to 10kbps over a period of half
an hour after initial connection. It looks like something (software,
set-up....) is throttling my connection.

I am using a 56k v92 modem and XP pro SP2 with Zone Alarm firewall

Is there software available to monitor what is happening in my computer and
on the line.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kobus,

Get Port Explorer (free) from
<http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexplorer/index.php?page=home> to show you what
network connections your computer is actually opening, what processes are
opening them, and how much bandwidth each active connection is using.
And Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager. Also, Autoruns (also free, and also from
SysInternals) <http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml> will
show you specifically what process are started automatically.

If your modem (I'm guessing dial up) is actually delivering 30K bandwidth, and
an unknown process is throttling you (stealing your bandwidth), the above 3
products should be a good place to start.

Most modems are explicitly designed to connect at an optimistic rate, and
downgrade the rate constantly, as necessary, until the signal to noise ratio
becomes acceptable. If you have a noisy line, or other type of bad connection,
this behaviour is normal.

You might want to ask for help interpreting the problem in comp.dcom.modems.
Someone there can walk you thru the process of getting diagnostic data from your
modem.
