Specific w2k freeze

w2k build 2195 SP4

Total freeze when loading windows update site, sites with service pack links, media files and unable to post onto newsgroups like this one. Problem persists despite:

f-prot scan - clean;
sfc /scannow;
spybot scan & cleanup;
Complete reinstallation from bootdisks onto a clean (fdisk delete & reformatted) drive

Any suggestions??

"spybot scan & cleanup"? I presume this is your anti-virus
software. What did you have to cleanup?
 
I used "Search&Destroy" to remove spybots of which there were only 4.

Problem is half-solved- by reducing the acceleration of the graphics card, I was able to update w2k. However, PC still freezes when opening media files.

files.Let me get this clear, you removed 4 spybots _after_
the new installation? Do you have a firewall and/or
router? Are you browsing using the Administrator
account?

smoothly- pc froze during installation of the easy configurator. After
reboot and internet wizard, I had internet access. US Robotics were
overwhelmingly patronising (worst ever customer service experience yet in
the Netherlands)- advised to go through LAN to access internet. Still able
to ping gateway though.

The problem with browsing using the Admin account, is that
if you are hacked, the hacker can assume your Admin permissions,
so the advice is: don't! Create a User account for all online
work and provide it with the minimum permissions you can get
away with. I'm using a PowerUser (at this very moment) with only
the permissions of: Read & Execute, List folder contents, Read.
I do, however, have full control for my non-system data folders.

Regarding the "US Robotics 9106 ADSL Gateway" (I couldn't
find the specs at usr.com) does it allow you to block both
incoming and outgoing packets on any port you choose? I
don't use a router, and am not familiar with them, but reading
between the lines on I get the
impression that they easily block incoming, but are poor at
blocking outgoing 'listening' system programs like svchost.exe

Using a software firewall (Kerio 2.1.5, which is free) I block
incoming TCP to it. God knows why mstask.exe is also
'listening' so I block both TCP and UDP incoming. There are
others, and specific troublesome ports you should block
both incoming and outgoing. If you want to reply to me
directly replace illemann with alananne.

Hello Alan,

If I reduce the acceleration of the NVIDIA driver, then the system works fine. There is nothing on the NVIDIA site that mentions w2k problems. Even at the lowest leel of acceleration, the pc freezes with media files and browsing.

Is this a Directx problem? I read somewhere that there was a problem with DirectX and WMP.
