I need to get the effect of circle 1, circle 2, circle 3, etc. Circle
1 is the numeral 1 in a circle, and so on. Can such effect be
achieved on Word? Thanks for help.

Go to Insert > Symbol, select the font Arial Unicode MS, make sure the
dropdown in the lower right corner says "Unicode (hex)", and set the
subset dropdown at the upper right to "Enclosed Alphanumerics" -- it's
about two-thirds of the way down the list. The Unicode characters 2460
through 2473 are circled numbers.

Thanks. I got all the symbols on Word 2003 on a computer in a public
library. But my notebook computer at home has only Word 2000.
Wondering whether it has those symbols, too. Will find out later.

Thanks again.
