Spam- Vista Ultimate

Maybe a very silly question but here goes:-

I am a home user who does a bit of research work as well.
This morning (Sunday) I received 704 email messages. Of these 701 turned out
to be spam, detected and quarantined by Qurb,
Now whereas Qurb is excellent at what it does, it takes quite a while to
download and process this garbage.
My question is whether it is possible that these items could be detected and
blocked without the need for downloading, quarantining and eventual dumping
them. This would save a lot of time and effort.....wouldn't it?

Effort? No.
Time - for you yes.

Your email provider may have some server side setup you can do - som spam
filtering at the source.
You could also look into MailWasher: http://www.mailwasher.net/
 
But how will your program run on the mail server. Mail servers typically
have software like this but they have to consider that people prefer their
mail delivered rather destroyed, so they let through anything that MIGHT be
ok, otherwise we would change ISPs to one that doesn't destroy our data.
 
Check with your ISP.
Mine allows a few options.
After a month of watching to see if any they marked as possibly spam
were spam, I saw none so I set it to delete all identified as spam.
Perhaps I have missed a few non spam as spam, but I really do not
know.

On the other hand I lost an Email that was buried in the large # of
spam just before I set the ISP spam tool up.
The large # of spam I received made it easier to accidentally
delete/miss something important.

There are also 3rd party options, but this one works for me.
 
Thanks everybody - I thought the question might be silly.
I realise now however that any solution would be drastic and probably result
in the baby going out with the bath-water.
Qurb works very well, by the way, and learns pretty fast.

I use Norton Internet Security 2007 in Outlook Express under XP but
they have not released the VISTA version of their free AntiSpam add-on
that exists for XP.

I like it because although I have to download all messages it sorts
Spam into a folder and learns as it goes. It's very quick to check the
Spam folder each time to make sure that a message I want hasn't gone
there, and then tell it not to do that again <g>

I don't have confidence in a system that does that before I get the
spam!

Prior to Vista I used Spam Pal. www.spampal.org. I haven't needed Spam Pal
since Vista.
