By changing the language to English (U.S.) (or at least some flavor of
English). This behavior is doubtless caused by having French or some other
language selected.

Thank you, but I've checked this out and it doesnt seem to matter what
language its in. It doesnt do this all the time (ie. putting a space
automatically in front of a semi-colon), but most of the time.
If it is some kind of language thing (ie. flipping in and out of another
language) is there a way to change a language's settings?
For a start, make sure that "Detect language automatically" is disabled in
Tools | Language | Set Language.
