Hi,
The space bar _never_ deletes, it adds a space. Normally the delete key or
the backspace key will delete. Turn on display of nonprinting characters and
you'll find all sorts of spaces that you may have thought were deletions.
Sometimes it doesn't matter, other times it will cause you real headaches.
I suspect you have somehow turned off the editing option that typing
replaces selection. Tools > Options > Edit
