I read that SP3 is out. Checked Windows update and it shows I'm up to
date, but only SP2 with 23 sub-items appear when I check. Is
something wrong?

Thanks

Mike

Hold yer horses! SP2 has NOT been released for general circulation yet,
what's all this about SP3?

There is no SP3 for Windows XP. The reference to SP3 must be for some
application, possibly MS Office, or something.

XP is only up to SP2 and it's still in beta.
SP3 could be for office xp(not windows xp) or win2k.

Since SP2 is nearly complete, any new issues that Microsoft
identifies with Windows XP probably gets a Sp3 hotfix ID,
meaning the final fix will appear in Service Pack 3.

Sorry, you read wrong. SP2 isn't even out yet. It's expected
later this summer or fall. SP1 (or SP1a) is the latest Service
Pack.

Perhaps you're thinking of Office SP3, not Windows XP.

Nothing's wrong, but you don't even have SP2 (unless you're
running a beta version). You probably have hotfixes that are
labeled SP2, but that's because of Microsoft's confusing
terminology. They are not SP2, but candidates for inclusion in
SP2.

That is probably the case, hotfixes for SP1 are labeled as SP2 however, I
have heard no other mention of SP3. I don't have SP2 and haven't been to the
SP2 newsgroup to keep up with what is going on with it.

Service Packs numbering is confusing, since the numbering
scheme is used for everything. When somebody mentions a
number you just naturally assume XP, But the person could
have been talking about Office Xp which is currently at Sp3.

That's a relief :-))

| I goofed. When I read the article again, it said SP3 to OFFICE not
| WINDOWS.

Rather than attempt to further patch XP, I'd like to see the gurus
incorporate all of the 300-400 fixes, hot patches, SP1 and SP2
into the basic OS, while deleting all the bells and whistles, to give
(literally) us a nice brand new lean, fast, and secure OS. And, like
Pizza Hut, buy five OS's and get the sixth one free...I'm due for a
free one!

They have. It's called Windows XP SP2 Integrated/Splipstreamed. SP2 is
a collection of all past patches, hotfixes, etc, and also includes quite
a few major improvements in security over SP1. It is currently in Beta
Testing and will probably be released in the near future.

I downloaded and installed SP2 RC2, and all I can say is no thanks.
That's not at all what I had in mind! I even tried to report a bug in
RC2 but learned that there were so many bugs being reported that the
built-in bug reporting feature could not be used. My bug was that
SP2RC2 killed my digicam security system.

Not SP3 of Windows XP. Not even SP2 for it, beyond late Beta version
for trial (the items you see are 'candisdates' for it, which will
possibly be modified in the final release).

You may have seen a reference to an SP3 for Win2000 which I think *is*
out, or for Office XP
