Just installed SP2. IE will not allow me(actually shuts
down) go on a university website in addition to a number
of other frequently used sites. I have shut off the
firewall, made it a trusted website but to no avail. Can
access it with Netscape and Opera. Is there something I'm
missing?

I'm having a similar problem - did you get any answers?
What do you think about uninstalling xp2?

Try setting the Internet Options, security tab settings
all to the default settings for all the zones.

Has anyone not resolved this yet? I can't believe that I'm the only one
who's installed SP2 on a PC and had IE and OE stop functioning.

This is also an upgraded (probably from ME, but not certain) PC with "lots"
of history. I've thoroughly cleaned out the trojans, spyware, etc, and
really don't want to do a format of the drive.

If it runs clean without SP2, what's the MS direction for patch updates?
Anyone have a good idea for doing a "clean" install of XP/SP2 without a
format? Anyone have any idea when MS will finally get this right? Is it
really THAT difficult?

Now I'm really pissed off. After RANTING about this stupid SP2 and IE
problem I've been fighting for the past two days, I get an "error posting -
please try again later..." Now I have to type all this again.... Thanks MS
I love you so much!

Back to my rant...

Has anyone solved this problem yet? After reinstalling XP and cleaning up
the trojans, spyware etc, and getting this formally upgraded (from ME I
think) PC running smoothly, I installed SP2. Now IE and OE don't work. They
open and then close immediately.

If I try to open a URL from an address bar, I get an error something to the
effect of "Explorer.exe tried to reference memory at address 000000" and the
screen refreshes. The same sort of error happens when I try to edit the
usernames in Control Panel.

If anyone has any ideas for doing a "clean" install without having to format
the drive, please let me know. We'll never be able to get all the apps
installed again.

Otherwise, what's the plan for supporting users without SP2? Are we at a
dead-end if we can't install?

Thanks,

Dan

You have a right to rant... Despite my noting the flurry of problems listed
herein concerning problems with SP2, I was told by a few Microsoft MVPs that
I was wrong and misinformed and a hysteric because I proclaimed this Service
Pack to be a disaster.... It was explained the SP2 was a very stable and
fine piece of software that would work fine if we followed a few simple
'house cleaning' chores prior to its install; In other words, the 'majority'
of people with XP did it o.k and the only people we read about on this Forum
were those with problems (who of course, are idiots) considering the huge
number of XP installs in the World, the few on here are not worth mentioning
or rather, could hardly cause SP2 to be labeled a disaster, and was further
'cautioned' not to impugn said MVPs as they know more than I and I do not
know what I am talking about.
I have NOT installed SP2....
As Cher used to say; .And the beat goes on......
