: how to uninstall SP2 from Winxp pro

Click on 'Start', then 'Control Panel'
Then 'Add or Remove Programs'
At the bottom of the list, you will find
'Windows XP service Pack 2'

As a CAUTION, there are bundle of stuff on XP pro
depends on SP2. If I were you, I would NOT
uninstall it so quickly. You may end up re-loading
the XP Pro altogether.

Thanks to User66 and to Rock: As a further part of my problem: The last
three items in my Add/Remove...page are: [3] windows installer 3.1, kb8893803
[2] windows media connect, and [finally] winzip: - no windows SP2

Maybe you didn't provide us with all the pertinent details? Was the
computer at a lower SP level and then upgraded to SP2, or did it come
preinstalled with XP at the SP2 level? If the latter, then it can't be
removed. If the former then someone removed the files allowing the removal
of SP2.

I don't remember - the machine is 3 years old, and XP pro was installed at
ibm. Whether it then had SP 2, I don't remember, but I think that I had to
download it later. About 8 months ago, the computer shop put in a new HD
for me to increase capacity, and transferred XP from the old HD to the new
one - including the SP2, so far as I know. At any rate, the sp2 is on the
machine now - and why is doesn't show up in the 'add / remove programs' i
dont have any explanation.

If it's not there then you can't remove it. Why do you want to?

Rock: When I go to the control panel, and then to 'system', the sp 2 shows up
as being installed: I want to get rid of it because I think that it is
interfering with the way I access other newsgroups - I think the entry bar
is so high that it is blocking me

I have you the links for how to remove SP2. If that doesn't work you're out
of luck. If you really want you could install XP with a CD that doesn't
have SP2. But I would suggest you figure out a way to fix the problem
rather than removing SP2. It's not clear what the problem is since you
didn't give much information about it, and I can't say that I can definitely
help you resolve it but if you want to post the issues with accessing
certain newsgroups, then see if someone has some suggestions. I recommend
you start a new thread with that question and include pertinent details such
as what newsgroups, how you try to access them, and what is not working,
error messages, etc. There could be other factors at work outside of SP2.

Rock: Many thanks for your patient effort - I'm sure frustrated. Rotten,
buggy program. And my son, who has a machine with the same stuff on it,
tried to help, and he has run into the same problem. But I'm finished with
it - i don't know what to do. I may try to have this hd reformatted and
go back to Win 2000, which at least worked better than XP when SP2 is added.

You're welcome. Are you going to post a new thread on these particular
problems? What is a rotten, buggy program? Do you mean XP w/SP2 or some
other program? Well every program has bugs. I have been running SP2 since
it came out with no significant problems. Sorry you're having trouble.
Maybe you need to change the programs you're using?

Win2000 is lethal if you don't:
- have a firewall
- patch the RPC defect (Lovesan etc.)
- patch the LSASS defect (Sasser, etc.)

The original PoC malware may be fading, but there are plenty of
workaday bots that still use those defects to infect you within
minutes of connecting to the 'net.
