SP2 Won't Install With ASUS BIOS

Since I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere by MS on their site or here (new
here, so may have missed it), I thought I'd let you know that SP2 will not
install on some ASUS motherboards due to a BIOS conflict. The computer will
freeze at the Windows XP screen as it boots up.

I believe there are new BIOS updates for some of the ASUS motherboards which
supposedly correct this problem, but some still don't have a fix (like my
P4P8SE).

Whether or not this is an issue for other motherboard nmanufacturers, I
don't know.

Dave,

it is not just the motherboard or the BIOS, it also depends on
the particular type and release level of the processor.

The details are explained in http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.

This non-security critical update helps resolve an issue where a limited
number of systems running a BIOS without production support for Intel
Pentium 4 and Intel Celeron D processors based on Prescott C-0 stepping
can potentially hang on Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation:

Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2

Geek's summary: SP2 will hard lock on all XP bootups if BIOS does
not push Revision 8 (sometimes 7) microcode to Prescott processors

Thanks to both you and Carey.

Dave,

you're welcome.

At least Asus does deliver new BIOS versions. I just read that
upgrading the BIOS on an eMachine voids their warranty. And, of
course, the current BIOS is not SP2 compatible. How do you like
that?

Correction: I can no longer find the message in which I read
that, but anyway it doesn't seem to be true. eMachine encourages
upgrading to Service Pack 2, see here:

Nor could I find anything in the warranty the prohibits updating
the BIOS.
