I have now tried both the network install version and the
Windows update version with the same result.

I am running XP Professional - it was one of the first
ones (I pre-ordered XP when it was released).

The download completes and the process backs up files and
the registry. The update fails staing "Can not read or
write database".

(Sorry posted this before to wrong group)

Malcom,

I've got the same problem. I have also tried the Windows
Update version and also the full download of the service
pack with the same result. I noticed a post from a third
person on this board a couple of days ago. So there are
at least three of us with this issue.

I have an Online trouble ticket submitted with Microsoft.
They finally responded to me today and told me that they
were assigning the problem to a technician, who would be
getting back to me within 24 hours.

If I get a good answer from them, I'll post the fix.

Paul,

It's something to do with the Cryptographic services. I'm
working through the stuff Microsoft sent me right now.
I'll post my results when I'm done.

Just found another post on the same subject with a batch
file that should solve the issue (not tried it my self
yet).

The thread starts "SP2 Installation" posted by BIGAL on
Aug 28 at 11:31.

Solution posted by Torgier Bakken (MVP) on Aug 30 at
10:46.

If this works I will let you know (I'm about 8 hours from
being able to try it).

Thanks to Torgier.

Hi

The batch file is now up at

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database"
