SP2 uninstalled (happily ever after?)

First it was causing internet explorer to seek out
http://files/internet explorer/iexplore.exe as my startup page every time
I started IE. This was frustrating and I couldn't find a solution.

Then I went to play my favorite game Medieval: Total War and error messages
popped up for the first time ever stopping the game from even loading.

So I removed Service Pack 2 and the problems went away.

Does anyone have any suggestions for securing my computer without Microsoft
updates?
