SP2 (Temporarily) Trashed My Computer!

Well, I just spend TWO very frustrating evenings attempting to install SP2.
Although I usually use a dial-up connection (and had already ordered the
CD-ROM version of the update), on Tuesday night I found myself in an airport
with lots of down time and a wireless connection, so I tried downloading
and installing. When it finally finished, and restarted, I got the BLUE
SCREEN flash error. I tried a few times, but no luck. So I used Norton
GoBack and was able to restore it to pre-update status and everything was
fine.

I arrived home today and found the CD-ROM had arrived in the mail. So I
thought I'd give it another go, figuring the worst that could happen would
be that I'd have to use GoBack. Surprise! Exact same error, only this
time, GoBack COULD NOT FIND ANY REVERT POINTS! Needless to say, I freaked
out. Then I tried going into Safe Mode and using System Restore. I tried
using restore points from today (pre-update), yesterday (pre-update) and
even the day before that. NONE of them worked. All of the responses I got
were that no files were changed. I couldn't think of anything else to do,
but finally I thought of going into Safe Mode and uninstalling SP2. Hooray!
It worked.

However, I'm still faced with the problem with how to get SP2 installed
successfully. I didn't have any programs running when I installed, other
than those running in the background. Should I have disabled or exited all
of them (e.g., the Norton programs, Zone Alarm, etc.)? Or is there
something else I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You should disable anti-virus and firewall, and all other programs in the
system tray..
