I did I format of my hard drive, installed xp pro, got the internet working
(after having some difficulty getting the drivers on to my computer, due to
the fact that I didn't have an internet driver), but I got it all working...
I installed hte security updates, then SP2... Before SP2, I was able to
download stuff and click links that opened new windows. Now, whenever I click
anything that opens a new window, or every time I click a download, the
internet explorer window freezes up. A few attempts at minimizing and waiting
about 30 seconds to a minute will unlock it, but it will do the same thing
every time you click on anything to download or open a new window (such as
click the "New Message" here in the newsgroup). The only time I get one of
those SP2 icons at the top ofthe explorer is when its opening a new window,
but I tell it to allow pop-ups, and it STILL fails. Any idea? Anyone?
please....

BTW, highly unlikely it's a virus or spyware as the only sites I have gone
by are google, and in google I only used it to get to the gateway driver
download page, and to get here. I'm thinking that there may be a missing
piece of software that isnt allowing some sort of SP2 message to pop-up, but
I could be wrong. Anyone have any ideas? Please?

Two monitor setup?

If so, look at the taskbar to see if anything is open but not appearing
in the onscreen viewable area.

If so:
- activate the off screen thing on taskbar

- Alt+Shift+M to move with cursor keys

- get the outline onscreen > hit return

In windows 95 off screen (or otherwise hidden) dialogue boxes were a bit
naughty from time to time

How are you connected to the Internet? If you connected directly to the
Internet through a dial-up modem or a broadband modem without going through
a router or a firewall then you most likely are infected. Pre SP2 versions
of XP are infected with Internet worms within minutes of connecting to the
Internet. It has nothing to do with what sites you browse. Infected
computers constantly scan the Internet looking for other computers to
infect. If you were not protected by a NAT device (router) or a firewall
(SP2 or other 3rd party apps) then you are infected.

One suggestion is to create an XP installation CD with SP2 integrated into
it. This way when the install is done, SP2 is already there. This is
called slipstreaming. Here are some links for how to do it. Autostreamer
makes it easy. To slipstream the stand alone version of SP2 is needed. I
have included a link for that.

In preparation for doing a clean install make sure you have all the needed
drivers on CD. Never go on the internet without having a firewall active.
In SP2 the firewall is activated by default. It is not turned on by default
in XP Gold or SP1.
