SP2 startup problem

I've succesfully installed SP2 on XP Home edition, on a laptop (Pico Oscar S
5600D)
But now, when I boot up into Windows I get abandoned in the Blue screen with
the "Windows is starting up . . ." message. At first the hard disk chunters
along for a bit, but eventually no more hard disk movement occurs.
Eventually, after 10 minutes (!) the generic XP screensaver comes on. When I
clear that, then I'm able to log on. But until then it seems there's nothing
I can do. Can anyone help?

When this first happened, I thought Windows was failing to boot at all, went
through the whole system recovery routine, then reinstalled SP2 again, only
to face the same problem. At least I know now that it will start, but 10 mins
is a bit of a problem.

Have you turned off all 3rd party services and startup to see if that helps
your startup speed
