For the past week I have been vainly attempting to install Win SP2 Upgrade.
All other Updates install without hussle.

1. I have tried installation via automatic Updates
(error message - Failed to install Catalog files (SP2)
2. Downloaded SP2 266 Mb from site indicated by an MVP
error: Installation (3 times freezes at different points and then reverts
system to its prior state.
3. Tried installation from a CD mailed by microsoft.
Had used it before successfully on this same machine: now half way, error
message states file(s) are corrupt.
Changed installation source from one optical drive to the other: no luck.
4. Downloaded SP2 full on my son's computer.
Then tried install via our LAN.
Error message: file(s) corrupt.

My System is fresh out of clean Format/Installation/ Activation of Windows
XP Pro SP1.
I have not yet even started installing Applications, so no other 3rd Party
application takes the blame.

I tried the Installation in Safe Mode with the same identical results.

Am wondering whether my Machine is BLacklisted at Microsoft or under a
spell???
Appreciate some practical help.

Thanks.

System: Windows XP Pro SP1
Machine: P-III Intel Coppermine 650Mhz
RAM: 640Mb
HardDisk: SAMSUNG 20Gb ( more than enough room for SP2 to drown itself!)
Optical Drives: DVD ROM and DVD RW

Slipstream your source XP CD-ROM, then do a Repair installation.
However, all these corruption/error(s) may be a symptom of something
more serious than an inability to load the Service Pack. I notice from
your specifications that you have 640 Megabytes of RAM. I would
remove all but the largest memory module and proceed from there.

I am prepared to try anthing: will remove the smaller 3rd module and
leave the 2 x 256. If this will solve the issue, I will come back. Will you
notice my reply after a lapse of say 1-2 days?

Thanks for now

Mr McCarty, pls acknowledge this reply if you can spare a moment.
I just wanted to tell you how much your suggestion is appreciated and thank
you for taking the time to reply.

Just one thing: "how could you have guessed it was a RAM module that gave me
such a heck of time?" I removed the 128MB dimm and all installations were a
breeze! (... and some other long-standing problems too.)

Best wishes
