Help.
I viewed the webcast about SP2, and was told that as a
result, I would get SP2 on CD.
I guess it's my own fault really, as it said Release
Candidate on it.

I installed it - or tried to.
About 3/4 of the way through, it started throwing error
messages.
After completion - there was no way to back out at this
point, simply no option to do so, the system will not
reboot without an "windows explorer has encountered a
problem and needs to shut down" error happening.

Okay. Repair the installation from original CD.
All went sort of okay - a couple of things would not
install, kept banging on about bluetooth etc. Don't have
bluetooth.
OS eventually installed, all looked okay.
Went to do a windows update from the website.

Another error message - apparently a certian file could
not be recognized, asked me to put in original CD. I did
so, not recognized. Had to cancel that security update.
Update finished, rebooted, got the "Windoes explorer has
encountered an error & needs to close" message again.

Am currently re repairing the repaired installation.

Looks as if I now lose 2 days taking down the entire
system, and somehow getting new authorization codes for
all my copy protected challenge/response software that is
going to assume I am installing a second time.

Thanks, Microsoft.
Oh - I phoned the office, who told me as an OEM system
builder, I had no support entitlement without paying.
Despite the fact that MS sent me the wrong disc and caused
the entire mess in the first place.

Very, Very annoyed about this.
That is 2 days this machine cannot work, so I have to lay
off a staff member. Who I still have to pay.
And I lose 2 days of my time rebuilding & reinstalling a
system.

So far, SP2 has now just cost me £2500 in lost earnings.
And it still isn't installed.

Shabby, my friends, shabby. I expect this from Apple, not
Microsoft.

================================

If you deal with PCs professionally then you should do either
of these things:
- Create a full backup of your system prior to installing upgrades, or
- Maintain images of your system drives

Hard disks are very cheap. An 80 GByte disk could easily store
images for 20 PCs. Restoration of an image takes less than one
hour. I assume such a disk would cost you £40, which compares
favourably with your claimed loss of £2500.

I guess you did not heed the warning on the Microsoft SP2 Preview
website about not installing SP2 beta on a "production machine".
The final version of SP2 installs and performs flawlessly!
