After downloading Sp2 I got a
C:\windows\system\vgaoem.fon error and wanted the start-
up disc,XP came preloaded.I followed hewlete packards
support advice pressing f10 at the blue screen to get the
recovery portion I did the nonstructured
recovery.Everything is gone. It's like someone changed
everything,How do I get my pictures back?My programs
antivirus,ad-aware,instant messengers,everything.I tried
to restore to a past date but it only shows today as
being able to restore to.I checked the recycle bin
nothing there. How can I get my computer back to normal?
Sp2 not even here and updates says I need 43 critical 54
other and 3 driver.Do I have a virus?This is not funny at
all.And packard support says they have a superviser call
me back within 3 days to explain my options. Are my
file/folders hiden somewhere, and how can I get then back?

Before making any major change, one should always backup/save important
files.. you appear to have used the 'restore to factory' option which will
have effectively re-partitioned, formatted and re-installed XP over whatever
was there before.. if you have a friend with a computer, it would be
possible to set your HDD up as a slave in their machine and use a file
recovery program to try to get back your pictures at least.. do not expect
miracles.. you have learned a hard lesson today.. remember it well..

Hate to tell you but it looks as if your "advice" was
very bad from HP. You probably reformatted your
partition and reinstalled XP. This action completely
destroys all your previous data on the drive.

Thanks thats what the h-p super told me,I did the wrong
one and erased it thanks, and thanks microsoft for SP2.

SP2 was not responsible for your loss.. unless you accept that you made the
mistake, it will happen again..

sad.... 2 things you might learn from this.. First, don't buy computers with
Restore Discs, rather than full install CDs from Microsoft.. 2. Don't
automatically download anything from Microsoft when it is first released,
despite what it sez on the Update Page just because it came from Microsoft;
there are now 'system patches to fix system patches, which means you will be
downloading 'security fixes' and 'critical updates' that will have further
patches to fix the very files you downloaded...

Since you posted a message here asking for help, before you do any of
that, read some of the other messages on the newsgroup and you will see ,
there are problems with blindly installing SP2..for example... Sure, you
probably, as the man said, chose the wrong option when you threw that
'restore disc' into the CD-ROM and that is a lesson some of us learned just
like you did, so you are not alone.. There is a learning curve and you are
on it, first step... Hopefully, you didn't lose anything critical. Believe
me, i personally have done some lame things since i bought my first PC as
far as making these kinds of choices. It comes from a lack of experience.
Most people who own a PC probably could care less about doing re-installs
and understanding more about their machines; they just wanna enjoy using
them, and if you take the initative to attempt to 'fix' something that
doesn't work as it did (whether that is software or hardware) you would be
well advised to be patient with yourself as you do so, find what you can on
the Web concerning the problem and then proceed with the knowledge that you
WILL make mistakes. And you will learn something every time, too.
Good luck..
