I have tried to install SP2 twice.

The first time - I just installed it! I got the problems described
later. And I uninstalled it. (Thank God MS got the uninstall right!!)

This time, I got the 'official' CD from MS. I uninstalled all the
spyware stuff I used to run, I uninstalled the Kerio firewall, I
uninstalled the AVG anti-virus, I uninstalled Web Patrol, ad-Watch and
any other sypware stuff I was running. I cleaned the temp files, IE
Temp files etc etc. I closed all the applications running in the system
tray - I defraged the syatem disk. Then I rebooted to make sure that all
that stuff was gone. I saved all my data files (thank God!).

Then I ran the SP2 update that I received from MS.

It failed in *exactly* the same way!!!

When the system re-loaded, there were excruciatingly long periods of
time when nothing happened. CTRL/Alt/Del worked fine, and Task Manager
showed that the System Idle Process was the most "active" process.

After about 2 mins, there was a burst of activity when things happened.
Things that I had clicked in the interim. Like clicking START - and
nothing happening for 2 mins!

This was *exactly* what happened first time I tried SP2 - I had hoped
that by deleting my AV, Firewall, Spyware etc - that all would be well.

I am running a 500 Mhz Pentium 3, 384Mb, 40Gb Disk with 28Gb free, XP
home SP1.

I have removed SP2 - and have restored my system to something close to
usability.

I don't need loads of messages from those that have successfully
installed SP2 - good for you!!

I haven't!! I have tried - twice!

I need Help!

When I installed SP2 on my main system (using a 3.2 gig processor and 1 gig
of RAM) I experienced long 15-30 seconds of inactivity during the final
boot. With your 500 meg processor, these periods may well extend into "many"
minutes.

On my brothers older system, he just left it on when he went to be. In the
morning he was at the desktop. It ran as slow as S**T, but it did run. Not
that I would ever put up with it (-:

Maybe I should have been clearer. This wasn't just following the boot
process. The 2 minute freeze happened every time after every burst of
activity. I would get about 30seconds of useful work, and then 2
minutes of nothing happening! 2 minutes where I could use ctrl/alt/del
to show that nothing was using the processor. 2 minutes where nothing on
the desktop reacted in any way. 2 minutes where moving the cursor over
a system tray item did not show the little pop-up. On one occasion,
even the pop up that tried to say that my "system may be at risk, hit
this icon" was frozen in a half formed state. At the end of each period
of 2 minutes, a sudden burst of activity where all the action I had
tried to get going suddenly happened - and the freeze again for another
2 minutes.

Getting control panel up to remove SP2 was a long, slow process - but it
eventually happened - praise be!
