My Dell 8100 slowed to less than a crawl after I
downloaded and installed XP SP-2. SP-2 increased my page
file, normally set at 384Mb-768Mb, to over 900Mb and
demanded more still. I could practically hear the chunks
of data being transmitted to the HP deskjet printer while
printing a simple 4-page Word doc and surfing the Web
(IE6). The browser refreshed at an agonizingly slow pace
when the printer actually printed a small part of the
data sent to it.

I uninstalled SP-2; now, SP-1a doesn't appear as a
downloaded component.

I don't think MS will let me download and reinstall just
SP-1a and the updates that were issued up to SP-2.

Help.

Oh, I disabled the "enhanced" Windows firewall on SP-2 (I
use NIS 2004 and it works better).

Thanks.

reinstall XP from scratch (eg, FDISK, etc) and don't
bother with SP2 until MS gets it straight. and they
wonder why folks are migrating to linux.

You must not of gone to Dell and downloaded the computer
updates from them before downloading SP2,if you read up
on SP2.Go to www.dell.com or hit your Dell help+support
from the start menu and try downloading SP2 again. You may
be able to get SP1a if you try the link for the windows
update from your start or all programs.Disable the auto
update first.Try the linux if you must but don't forget
to pay up $49-$99 a year for there store room of programs
that makes the programs you upgrad to run.I.E.:I like
say...Diablo II ,oh linux won't run it,huh oh I can pay
$49 bucks and see if it's in there great.Oh what if it's
not oh I can wait for them to find a way for them to find
the fix to it so I can use it.And I like paying the $50+
a year.So lets see I paid $50+$69 upgrade then I pay $49
for the warehouse a year hummm I'm out $158 bucks and $49
more every year and have to do all kind of crazy hunting
every time I want to load a program, that sounds like fun!
WOW where do I sign up!I had to pay $99 for this crappy
XP Home that comes with free updates for years and runs
my programs without selling me extra software to make
them run.
