SP2 is "nagging"

Dear NG,

I installed SP2 yesterday after the automatic update loaded "gazillion"
bytes on this computer. Fortunately, everything went smoothly. I have a
hardware firewall in my Linksys router. I turned off the software firewall
in the Windows Security Center (WSC). Every time I boot this machine, the
WSC nags me that the firewall is off and would I like help turing it on.
How can I disable this warning?

I have used the ShieldsUP program from Gibson Research Corp (grc.com) to
verify that the hardware firewall is working well. So far, nothing bad has
happened after the installation. Only time will tell if SP2 is a benign
update. Thanks in advanced for your help.

Sincerely,

Bob

Open the Security Center; confirm the answer "I have a firewall I
monitor myself".

Hi Quaoar,

Thank you. I did not find "I have a firewall I monitor myself" however I
did notice the reference to "Change the way Security Center alerts me."
Followed that link to the checkbox about Firewall and unchecked same.

Cheers,

Bob

Sometimes that setting won't stick on reboot. If that's the case you
can disable the security center service in services.msc.

Dear NG and Quaoar,

I thought I had this nailed. I did not find the exact spot you noted: "I
have a firewall I monitor myself". I did find "Change the way Security
Center alerts me." I unchecked the Firewall option. When I shut down
yesterday, it looked like it worked. Sadly, when I rebooted this morning,
the Firewall warning balloon was back again. What is going on here?

Cheers,

Bob

As you have discovered, this setting doesn't stick on all systems. The
next step is to disable the security center in services. Go to Start |
Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools |
Services. Scroll down to Security Center. Stop it and set it to
disabled. Since you have AV and a firewall you don't really need the
security center as long as you regularly monitor them to make sure all
is well.
