SP2 install fails due to incorrect system filename

This has got to be one of the stupidest encounters with SP2 I've ever
seen or heard of.

An SP2 installation failed due to the operating system giving one of
it's own system files an incorrect file name. It wasted over two hours
of my work time because Windows XP incorrectly named this file
msdart.dll instead of the correct name of msdart32.dll. Here's how it
progressed...

Verified XP Pro SP1a system to be malware and virus free and no device
driver issues. All currently applicable Windows updates in place.

Around 90% of the way through SP2 install I got this:
"Migrate.exe - entry point not found.
The procedure entrypointGetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link
library msdart.dll."
Repeated ad-infinitum.
Clicked Ok about 15 times. Could not kill it in Task Manager, it just
honked and came back as if I'd clicked on Ok again. Had no choice but a
forced shut down and restart restart via Task Manger.

Then:
"Setup was interrupted. Restoring prior configuration."
This took as long as the attempted install had taken.

Another restart then after login got:
"Windows XP Service Pack 2.
The Windows service pack installation did not complete. the system is in
an unstable state. Go to Control Panel Add or remove Programs and choose
to uninstall the Windows service pack, or contact your system
administrator."

Did as directed, removed SP2. Restarted. All the hardware device drivers
now had to reinstall (more waiting). Restarted. Renamed the problem file
to what it is suppposed to be. Restarted. Reinstalled SP2.

Now I have what appear to be firewall issues with Novell networking but
that's another issue I may post about in another thread if I don't
resolve it (and maybe even if I do).

Steve,

I have msdart.dll on my Windows XP SP2 installation. I don't have
msdart32.dll.

Could it be that this file is from another program that you have installed,
and now it has gone missing?

Possibly, but not likely. Was there some sort of a "file missing or
corrupt" error? No, there was not. I'd have said so if there was; I'm
very thorough.

This is what tipped me off:

"Msdart.dll Problems, Error Messages and Workarounds and Suggestions

'The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be found in the dynamic
link library MSDART.DLL.'

1. This is caused by Windows XP improperly naming the msdart dll file."

Correcting the filename solved that problem. The file is the same code,
just renamed.

If it wasn't so d@mned stupid and waste my (or rather, my employer's)
time then it just might be almost funny. I thought we got over this kind
of sloppy programming with all that Y2K BS. Light-years ahead of
previous Win-OSes, my hiney.
