SP2 has shot my notification icons

I decided to install SP2 to my IBM R31 Thinkpad laptop yesterday. I did all
the right things, clean booted, etc., but sadly did not remember to create a
system restore point, and SP2 didn't think to either... and I have no earlier
restore points available now.

The problem is that SP2 has caused no notification icons to show in the
bottom right of my taskbar, beside the clock. No AV, no firewall, no USB
icon, no dial-up connection icon - nothing.

Reinstalling those programs doesn't bring the icons back.

Will my only option be to reinstall the OS from scratch from the hidden
partition on th HDD? (Really don't want to do this. The laptop didn't come
with its own XP cd).

I do have access to an XP CD however, if this will help.

Many thanks guys.

Sorted it now. Decided to format the whole lot and reinstall XP from scratch.
Then installed MS Office 2K. Then SP2. Then all my programs. Took about four
hours all in, but works OK now. Seems that is the key to success with SP2: a
clean install onto a fresh XP.

But what a performance for no real gain! SP2 is only a nagging system to
coerce newbies into taking basic security measures like a firewall and AV. I
see no other benefit and wish I'd stayed with SP1 all along. I've switched
off all the nags now anyway...
