I received a copy of SP2 via auto update. I have decided not to install it
at this time, but it's sitting there in my system tray, reminding me
periodically to install it. How do I eliminate the download from my system?

Clean out the download folder (WU5's temporary download folder)
located here:

Go to Start > Run and type:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

To avoid Automatic Update from trying to install SP2 at all
(up to April 12, 2005):

Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of Windows XP SP2 to a PC
Through Automatic Updates and Windows Update

Run the XPSP2BlockerTools.exe in the link above. It will extract
several files to the folder you specify.

Then run XPSP2Blocker.exe to activate the blockage (it will create
the registry value described in the link above).

Following your directions, I was able to delete most of the contents, but a
few items would not delete because they are in use. What do you suggest
now?

Jeff

Perform a "clean boot", then repeat the procedure.
