I work at home and use my computer periodically during the day. I have a
DSL line so am always connected. There are times throughout the day when I
need to check something on line quickly or send an email. Since installing
SP2 whenever I've been away from the computer for more than an hour I cannot
get back on to the internet without restarting the computer which is
annoying at least and very time consuming. I never had this problem before
the install but cannot find anything to correct it. I'm about reading to
uninstall SP2. I have disabled the Windows firewall since I'm using
ZoneAlarm.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks.

Actually I had that problem myself and found it was zonealarm causing it.
Try turning on the XP firewall and turning off zonealarm and see what
happens.

Pam,

In the settings for your Windows check that you have turned it off for every
thing including your BroadBand. If there is still a problem, check whether
ZA is causing it; enable the Windows firewal and then turn off ZA.

One piece of advice; DON'T UNINSTALL SP2! I had a similar problem
(worse actually, couldn't get internet access at all). After trying a
few of the fixes I read on newsgroups with no luck I figured SP2 was
the problem so I uninstalled it. Guess what? Now I have no desktop!
I mean nothing, no icons no start menu, all I have is my wallpaper,
can't even right click on the screen. So now I'm trying to re-install
Windows and I can't even do that! Can you believe the damn thing
won't even re-install! What a nightmare. Worse part is it's my
wife's computer and she's gonna kill me.

Where do I check to see if it is turned off for broadband? I haven't been
able to find a setting that specifically mentions that. I should say that I
had been running ZoneAlarm for quite some time without the problem. Would
there have been something installed with SP2 which created a conflict with
ZA?

Thanks for the warning. I was thinking about trying it using system restore
instead of just uninstalling. It's really annoying but I guess rebooting is
better than not getting a connection at all.

Pam,
Yes SP2 may have created a conflict with Zone Alarm.
First try without the Rirewall that has been installed by SP2.
Click the Start button and open Run
Type in wscui.cpl and click OK
This will open the SP2 Security Centre. Now you can turn the whole thing
off
or you can leave it ON and go down to the bottom toand click the Windows
Firewall,
open the Advanced tab and ensure that all connection are UNCHECKED.
Then close the Securtiy Centre. Now if you still cannot access the internet I
suggest that you re-enable the Windows Firewall
and then turn of Zone Alarm to make sure it is not the cause of your
problem. If it is
you will need to check the interent settings. Double click the ZA icon in
the sys tray
and click Firewall and make sure your network is present.

Thanks, Jon. There were two settings still ticked in the advanced screen so
I unchecked those. Hopefully that will do the trick. I had turned the
Firewall off on the main screen but it looks like everything doesn't get
turned off after all.
