Hi all, just installed SP2 on a WinXP Home and installed
fine and now rebooting. When i hit F8 and tell it
to "Disable automatic restart on system failure" i get an
error the the file "winfrv" is not found. System wont
start in safe mode and it is a emachine and therefor does
not have a normal WindowsCD but only a recovery disk.
Please help me...

I just wanted to report that I have the same problem, but when I disable
automatic restart, all subsequent reboots fail at a blue screen complaining
of a missing file "winsrv" (not winfrv).

I had to do a repair install using my XP CD to get my PC to work again.

Matt,

I don't know offhand whether the repair install keeps the
service pack 2 or resets the computer to the CD state. I think
the latter is true, so you'd have to reinstall service pack 2
again to have it.

But you can test this quickly and easily by looking at the
properties of My Computer, where it should say Service Pack 2.

You're not alone! I have had the same thing happen to
me. Microsoft has documented a problem with SP2 and
UMAX drivers, but you need to be able to boot the system
to make the fix. What a catch-22!

John;
Then remove the hardware and uninstall the drivers.
Then install SP-2 followed by the latest Windows XP drivers.
First verify that the drivers are compatible with SP-2.
